Is Your Food Expired? Don’t Be So Quick to Toss It

  • ‘Use by’ and ‘best by’ dates on food are only an indicator of peak freshness, not a measure of food safety
  • In many cases, foods are still safe to eat even after these dates have expired
  • Forty percent of the US food supply is thrown away uneaten every year because of expired food dates, even though the food is often still safe
  • ‘Sell by’ dates aren’t meant for consumer use at all; they’re intended to help retailers ensure proper product turnover
  • The greatest factor impacting whether your perishable food has spoiled isn’t total storage time but rather how much time it spends in the temperature ‘danger zone’ (between 40-120 degrees F)

In less than two weeks, thousands of truckers will descend on Washington, D.C., driving their big-rigs and calling for the restoration of a constitutional republic – but now their plan has taken a new twist: Their friends and families will simultaneously join other Americans rallying on overpasses across the nation for Obama’s impeachment.
The Truckers’ Ride for the Constitution movement has a new ally in their protest against what organizers say is corruption in government and a trashing of the Constitution. The group is teaming up with Overpasses for Obama’s Impeachment to line the routes into Washington with flags during the Oct. 11-13 event.

Man diagnosed as 'comatose' for 23 years was actually fully conscious, but paralyzed

(NaturalNews) Imagine being stuck in your bed, conscious but unable to speak or move, for a quarter of your life, while everyone around you thought you were just a comatose "vegetable." This is what happened to 50-year-old Rom Houben of Belgium, who back in 2006, and later reported in 2009, was discovered to have actually been fully conscious, just paralyzed, for all these years, following a near-fatal car accident he suffered back in 1983.

It is one of the most nightmarish thoughts imaginable, being stuck in a lifeless body but unable to communicate with anyone for a full 23 straight years. But somehow, Houben was able to survive this unimaginable experience that shatters much of what the medical system thought it knew about brain damage and being unconscious. The entire coma diagnosis process as we currently know it, in fact, is now in question, as many more allegedly comatose individuals out there could actually be fully conscious and aware of their surroundings.

According to the U.K.'s Guardian, Houben has essentially been a prisoner in his own body since the early 1980s, unable to communicate with nurses, family and others who continually tried to communicate with him. It was not until 2006 when a new state-of-the-art PET scanning system came onto the scene that Houben's caretakers came to realize the error of their assumptions -- Houben had all along been able to hear and understand life, as it was taking place around his otherwise lifeless body.

"I screamed, but there was nothing to hear," said Houben via a special keyboard that was made for him following the discovery. "[I] traveled with my thoughts into the past, or into another existence altogether. I was only my consciousness and nothing else," added the former engineering student, who speaks four different languages, about how he coped with his vegetative life.

Recalling the day his caretakers first discovered that he had been fully conscious all those years, Houben says it felt like a "second birth," as it quite obviously changed the course of his entire existence in a major way. All the anger, powerlessness and despair that Houben felt all those years, which he says he soothed away through meditation and other desperate means, was gone in an instant.

The Hypocrisy of Federal Fitness Promotions

  • Childhood obesity has more than doubled in young children and tripled in adolescents over the past 30 years; 18 percent of American children between the ages of six and 11 now fall in the obese category
  • Five percent of American children are “severely obese,” which puts them at grave risk for chronic diseases typically reserved for adults, such as heart and liver disease
  • Ironically, the celebrities chosen for the First Lady’s Let’s Move! campaign are the same people telling them to eat Oreos, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Burger King, and to drink Pepsi and other “designer” sodas
  • While most kids surely need more exercise, it must be understood that more exercise is not enough to counter the ill effects of a high refined-fructose, processed food diet
  • You do not get fat because you eat too many calories and don't exercise enough. Your consumption of grains and sugars, especially fructose, will determine whether or not you're able to manage your weight and maintain optimal health

Close ties between White House, NSA spying review

WASHINGTON (AP) — Stung by public unease about new details of spying by the National Security Agency, President Barack Obama selected a panel of advisers he described as independent experts to scrutinize the NSA's surveillance programs to be sure they weren't violating civil liberties and to restore Americans' trust.
But with just weeks remaining before its first deadline to report back to the White House, the review panel has effectively been operating as an arm of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees the NSA and all other U.S. spy efforts.

Pope attacks global economics for worshipping 'god of money'

By Philip Pullella
CAGLIARI, Sardinia (Reuters) - Pope Francis made one of his strongest attacks on the global economic system on Sunday, saying it could no longer be based on a "god called money" and urged the unemployed to fight for work.
Francis, at the start of a day-long trip to the Sardinian capital, Cagliari, put aside his prepared text at a meeting with unemployed workers, including miners in hard hats who told him of their situation, and improvised for nearly 20 minutes.
"I find suffering here ... It weakens you and robs you of hope," he said. "Excuse me if I use strong words, but where there is no work there is no dignity."
He discarded his prepared speech after listening to Francesco Mattana, a 45-year-old married father of three who lost his job with an alternative energy company four years ago.
